Your blog provides a great way to build a personal relationship with customers and prospects — and to gather their email addresses. Consistently end blogs with a call to action that encourages readers to sign up for your email messages. Require blog visitors to provide an email list in order to leave comments, and set it up so that they have to actively opt out if they don’t want their email address included on your mailing list.
Conversations. You’ve had conversations with people on social media. What are they talking about? What are they repeatedly asking you about? Wouldn’t you love to have an email autoresponder handy so the next time you’re asked, you can mention that it is available? Places like Inbound or Quora are a great place to find out what people want to know about. Just read the conversations they have with each other. Answer their questions, and tell them about your email autoresponder. Social media isn’t as mathematical as pure analytics, but it is a good measurement of what people say they are interested in.
I know the idea of creating a freebie can be stressful (see my post on creating the perfect freebie for more on this!), but it doesn’t have to be all about a freebie or lead magnet. Consider the kind of content you can offer on a weekly or monthly basis that will benefit your readers. Maybe that’s resources or info. Maybe that’s entertainment or encouragement. Don’t let your email come last! Your subscribers are your VIPS, remember? Give them your BEST.

Doing a target audience research need some new topics to cover or simply want to see how people perceive your product, service, or a brand? Use Survey Monkey to ask them, offering the results in exchange for their email address and voila! Got yourself an email list pretty quick!
When you meet people face to face for any reason, ask for their business card. Offer yours. Set a glass bowl on the counter in your store or the reception desk in your office, and ask visitors to drop their cards in it. You might be doing all the right things to generate leads -- landing pages, gated content, contests, and more. The problem might be that the design or copy itself isn't driving the engagement you need. A/B test (also known as "split test") different aspects of your list-building campaigns with different versions of the same content. This includes the call-to-action text, the color of the gated offer, the time of day you're posting to social media, and even where on your website these signup forms are placed. Sometimes a small change can drive hundreds more conversions.
I’ll never forget the fun we had at those NFL celebrations at Regent Street in London, a couple of years back. My sister and I took part in a couple of games, one of which required yelling some American Football words at the top of our voices, and our mum was certain we were going to nail this. Sure this sounds supportive, but our mum’s focus was on “yelling”. Joke’s on her, we failed miserably (…we only caught “quarterback” out of all the words).
When you create new content that isn’t available anywhere else, you can “sell” your email autoresponder course on the promise that there is exclusive new content not available anywhere else. Readers need to sign up if they want it. So, whether or not you’ll publish all newly created content on your blog depends on if you are using exclusivity as part of the enticement.
The key to a great email list building is to know your audience and what it is they would need from you. It’s what helps you tailor the right content/offer/product/service that matters the most, that will convert in you receiving their emails. People don’t want to be disturbed, let alone with offers they don’t want or need, so do your research and prepare tailored proposal they would gladly like to receive.
